MyCharleston has been successful because we offer so much than your average dance class. The courses are designed to get people talking and more often laughing. It’s a dance class for people to have fun, gain skills and to get fit without noticing. There are social events, performances and film projects so people can dress up and enter the glamorous world of the 1920s. We are proud to have a 75% retention rate on regular courses we know our teaching method works.

We are leading the way in providing a new dance service and reviving a dance genre which is not as well recognised on the dance circuit. Our brand is unique as we are the only dance company in the UK exclusively offering Charleston dance classes. Charleston is a solo dance so it doesn’t matter if you're a beginner or more advanced because you can work at your own pace. The average age in our dance classes is mid-forties but ages range from 18 all the way up to 80.

We are now looking to expand our reach by taking on new teachers to deliver MyCharleston courses and workshops. We are currently recruiting in Portsmouth. If you are based in another location and interested in our training programme, we would still love to hear from you.

What will you learn?

Full training will be provided so you can deliver our classes feeling confident you have mastered this dance style and the course content. You will learn the full vocabulary of Charleston moves, style, technique, terminology but our teaching method. Training will also cover classroom management and health and safety. Our training courses are delivered by the founders of MyCharleston and you will also receive on going support with video tutorials, music playlists and teaching manuals.

Our ethos

MyCharleston wants to promote dance by making it accessibly, inclusive and fun for adults of all ages and abilities. Students should feel they have learnt a new skills, improved co-ordination and made new friends in their local community. We select the best dance studios and we help everyone who comes through our doors to feel at ease by clearly explaining the structure for each class. We want students to leave class feeling happy, relaxed and like they have had a good workout. We believe dance is a joyful experience which can be shared by all.

We receive wonderful feedback from our students across the South Coast who love MyCharleston - we now want to engage more people by expanding to new regions.

Is MyCharleston for you?

We have exciting opportunities for new teachers to launch in new areas across the UK! We have scheduled training days in February 2020 and will be opening in new locations by Easter 2020. 

Our current teachers come from a range of dance styles and movement backgrounds; You must be an experienced dancer with a proven record of teaching groups in a classroom setting. Fitness instructors and yoga teachers will be considered if they have the necessary experience and skills as a dancer. We want candidates who genuinely enjoy teaching, who can hold a space and respond to the needs of a group with enthusiasm and initiative. 

You do not need to know Charleston, this is a niche dance and our training will provide you with enough knowledge to run a beginners class. However we are looking for people who have a strong interest and love of Charleston and early jazz dance and music. The knowledge we have gained through our only dance journey in Charleston means we can direct you to resources online, dance camps and workshops which would allow you to develop as a Charleston and solo jazz dancer. A commitment and passion for learning this style is a quality we are looking for in potential candidates.
